Cracked Teeth
A cracked tooth can cause serious discomfort, so at Dentistry at Millennium Park, we are here to help with immediate and effective endodontic care. Whether you’ve experienced a traumatic injury or your tooth cracked from general wear and tear, we’ll take care of it. Hopefully your pain isn’t constant or severe, but it’s still essential to treat it right away.
Symptoms of Cracked Teeth
You may experience a variety of symptoms with a cracked tooth, from erratic pain that occurs while chewing or biting, to sharp pain when your cracked tooth is exposed to extreme temperatures (hot or cold). You may also feel a constant or dull pain.
This is not a problem to ignore. The crack means the hard outer part of the tooth is broken, which can cause pulp irritation when you chew. Eventually, the pulp becomes so damaged that it can no longer heal itself and could potentially cause a deep infection, needing additional treatment from our team.
Treatment of Cracked Teeth
Visit us as soon as you experience any symptoms. Our team will do everything possible to save your tooth while also relieving any pain or discomfort. Our course of treatment will depend on the type, location, and extent of the crack you have.
Types of cracks:
- Craze lines are tiny cracks that affect only the outer enamel, and are very common in adult teeth.
- A fractured cusp is when a piece of a tooth’s chewing surface breaks off, often around a filling.
- A cracked tooth means the crack extends from the chewing surface of your tooth vertically toward the root.
- A split tooth is identified by a crack with distinct segments that can be separated.
- A vertical root fracture contains cracks that begin at the root of the tooth and extend toward the chewing surface.
