Scaling & Root Planing
When we need to remove plaque and bacteria below your gum line and in between your teeth—areas that can’t be reached with your normal at-home oral health care or in a standard teeth cleaning, we use scaling and root planing.
At Dentistry at Millennium Park in Chicago, this treatment is like a deep cleaning for your gums, and can be very useful if you are struggling with the beginning stages of periodontal (gum) disease. Scaling and root planing can reverse the disease and get your oral health back on track.
What Happens During Scaling and Root Planing?
Our team wants to stop gum disease early and give you your healthy smile back, and we work hard to make sure you are comfortable during this procedure.
Your first step is a consultation with our team to evaluate the current state of your teeth and gums. The treatment starts with scaling, which is the removal of plaque and tartar from below your gum line. Next is root planing, where we smooth out rough edges near the base of the tooth and root surfaces so your gums can fit snugly around the tooth once again. This also helps seal the gum line to prevent more bacteria from infecting the tooth.
